The Stavanger Area
Stavanger is a great starting point for nature lovers, with stunning fjords, mountains and beaches less than an hour away. Whether we want to go hiking, skiing, mountain-biking, sailing, surfing – or even base jumping – we will find it all within reach.
Greater Stavanger offers a rare paradise for the outdoor enthusiast or anyone who appreciates seeing nature at its most magnificent. The region is nestled between the fjords and the mountains with pristine white beaches (yes I said WHITE!) along the coastline. The opportunities to absorb the culture and enjoy leisure
activities abound with the culture offerings increasing and changing constantly as the city prepares to be the European Cultural Capital in 2008.
Stavanger is the European Capital of Culture 2008 and this is their official website: www.stavanger2008.no

Stavanger 2008 Events – June
The coming months are packed with plays, concerts, exhibitions and street festivals (see stavanger2008.no). So it’s a good time to get lost in Stavanger’s cobbled streets, lined with elegant 18th- and 19th-century wooden houses, where many of the events will take place.
Street Festival (6-8 June)
Stavanger has its very own Street festival in 2007, organised by Stavanger2008. All over town there was juggling, acrobatics, dancing, music and singing, theatre performances, skating and even graffiti on the programme. We are preparing a new round in June 2008.
Local performers of all kinds of street performances are invited to participate, particularly children and young people. The Humour Festival 2008: Eurohumor invites international groups to take part in the festival. The Flaks juggling group will also take part, at the same time as they organise the “Bestkystfestivalen” (The BestCoast Festival), with jugglers invading the streets. Sports organisations will present a sports show.
The festival will be organised in cooperation with Metropolis, the Sports Council, the Humour Festival and the BestCoast Festival.

Inbal Pinto Dance Performance
This comes highly recommended – we’ll go the last night you’re in Norway!
The strikingly beautiful and oddly charming, the poetical, funny, dark and magical. These are some of the characteristics of Inbal Pinto. The award-winning dance company from Israel tours the world with performances, such as Oyster, where men live on two floors in coat-like tents, and where theatre, dance and circus is mixed with visual strength. The company creates fables and worlds, shows us the toy shop at nightfall. The expression changes between dance and theatre, between the spectacular and aesthetical tableaus, and intense humour.
Stavanger2008 has invited young and international groups of artists to not merely present their projects in Stavanger and Sandnes, but also to live for four weeks in our region as artists in residence. The artists are in the international vanguard within their different fields of theatre, music and opera, dance and mixed media.
Inbal Pinto Dance Company will be the artists in residence in June 2008, and will unwrap an entirely new performance, created through work-shops held in Stavanger and Sandnes. Participants from the region will join Pinto’s own ensemble. Inbal Pinto will also perform their renowned shows “Oyster” and “Shaker”. The company will give three performances – two in Sandnes cultural centre, and one at Tou Scene in Stavanger.

I am really looking forward to going to The Lysefjord! Can we hike to pulpit rock?

that we could do! or we could take a helicopter up!
it’s a long hike up grey stones. i find it a bit difficult – not because of the level of physical fitness required, but because they make me dizzy.
i’d do it again though… it’s so worth it!
